Review: Watchmen: Chapter II

WATCHMEN_-CHAPTER-II-2024

Watchmen Chapter II is one of the most popular graphic novels of all time and considered one of the most definitive superhero stories of the last century. Despite a decent film adaptation by polarizing visionary Zack Snyder 15 years ago and an Emmy-winning sequel series by sci-fi aficionado Damon Lindelof five years ago, the original has never received the recognition it deserves… until now. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Animation, Paramount Pictures and DC Entertainment released a joint adaptation of the novel titled Watchmen: Chapter I. As the name suggests, it covers only the first half of the story. This week sees the release of the second part, titled Watchmen: Chapter II. Though both parts are careful adaptations of the same book, they are also two completely different movies.

For those unfamiliar with the basic plot of this graphic novel, it is set in an alternate version of the 1980s. In this world, most superheroes are vigilantes. The main group of heroes in this world are called the Watchmen. They have so much power and influence that the government has to use them in the war. But when the government no longer needs the heroes, it declares vigilante activity illegal. A few years after her forced retirement, one of the last remaining six members is murdered. When another member decides to investigate, he uncovers a conspiracy that may be linked to the start of World War III.

Again, unlike previous installments in this series, nothing has changed except the way the story is presented. Chapter One is the origin story of our heroes, Chapter Two is a philosophical thriller. While the first chapter nicely draws us into this world and its flawed characters, Chapter Two forces us to examine the similarities between this world and ours through the lens of each character’s psyche. Alan Moore’s original work is so schizophrenic, tackling multiple monumental themes and at times transcending space and time, that it was a brilliant decision by director Brandon Vietti and screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski to simultaneously split and simplify the story.

Chapter 1 is important in laying the framework for the film’s existential ideas and overall mystery. But in chapter 2, the characters have to come to terms with their own decisions to solve this mystery. That doesn’t mean part 2 is better than part 1; it is much more effective, though. Even if you know the story, after watching the first movie, you’ll want to know what happens next. He’s a really inspiring guy. But the second film evokes a sense of bittersweet desolation and optimism that couldn’t be more relevant in today’s political climate.
