The opening half of Venom The Last Dance 2024 was quite lackluster. You don’t have much time to consider or absorb the three primary plot strands before they are thrown at you. Although Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock/Venom is always entertaining, some of the opening sequences didn’t seem to fit in with the remainder of the story. I understand that the goal was to strengthen Eddie and Venom’s bond to increase the impact of the ending, but some of those sequences were superfluous and rather detracted from the story. The film initially struggled to establish its tone because it had three storylines to tie together at the conclusion.
While the subsequent scene was a major story driver, the previous scene would be humorous and ludicrous. When composing this portion of the script, it seemed as though the screenwriters had neglected to take their ADHD medicine. Although Knull’s introduction was compelling, it seemed like they didn’t employ him enough. I would have loved to see more Knull, and I hope they do more with him in the future, but it makes sense in a way because they don’t want to detract too much from the ending and the plot was already complicated enough.
There was much more coherence in the second half. Although a few scenes still felt hurried, the tone was more solemn and the humor was much more integrated with the action. I found the moment when the hippies were driving to Vegas to be very charming. More than all the moments in the first half, that one scene established the Eddie/Venom link. The film’s finale, in my opinion, was when everything was finally coming together and it seemed like a really exciting Marvel film. Dan Deacon’s score was strong throughout the entire film.
It was fascinating to see all of the symbiotes battle, and the spectacular effects were amazing. Eddie’s survival despite being essentially near Ground Zero annoyed me, and the hippies’ reintroduction felt needless, but I appreciated that they didn’t pull a fake out and bring Venom back. It was a nice touch for Eddie to relive their happy memories now that he’s gone. The set designs were interesting, and the supporting players were excellent as well.
